Perhaps a better description would be ‘writing enhancement tools.’ ProWritingAid and Grammarly are both grammar checkers, although they can do a lot more than just check your spelling and punctuation. Which is where grammar checkers can help.
Errors you just haven’t the time to hunt down and eliminate. Even a novelist nowadays is expected to produce new books much faster than before. Often as a blogger, freelancer, or editor, you are committed to writing thousands of words daily. Sherna Khambatta, who handles both fiction and nonfiction at Wade & Doherty Literary Agency, said in an interview asking why agents reject manuscripts: “The manuscript is not worth our attention if there are glaring grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.” Īnd if you’re a novelist, it’s the same scenario. In one survey, US businesses with poor grammar and spelling on their websites lost double the number of potential customers than those with fewer errors. It’s truly one of the best tools out there for me as an author because it helps me look at my work objectively before I send it to my editor. PWA seems to work for the creative writer a bit better. It’s customizable! My major frustration with Grammarly (though I adore Grammarly for other editing ventures) is that I don’t have the option to customize. If you don’t need PWA to check for adverbs, for example, just turn that check off. It does all the spelling, grammar, style, and consistency things you expect out of writing software. If you’re looking to improve your flow of writing, it’s amazing. Oh, and the thesaurus is a great tool because it suggests rich words that take your writing to the next level. All that is so important to the reader experience. Third, it identifies sentences that are overly complex, looks at the pacing throughout your story, checks dialogue distribution, and points out repeated words, echoes, and even sentence length variations. This is what I have the ProWritingAid checking for when running my personalized Combo. But it gives you the option to run personalized checks for the issues you want rather than checking for everything but the kitchen sink. Second, It’s a really hearty tool, and I don’t use everything it offers.

I’ve dabbled with their Safari integration and used it to check this blog post. There are a million more checks ProWritingAid can do, so then open the program or go to their Web Editor to do your work. Run your ProWritingAid checks right in your doc, either in Scrivener or Word, and then save. But once I get serious about sending my story off to my editor, I always move over to Word because their Track Changes beats no other. The ease of clicking to a scene and weaving threads through several other scenes without having to scroll for hours saves me from carpel tunnel pain. I draft and do as much revising in Scrivener as I possible. I tested it out, and the integration makes it so much easier to keep all my changes in one document rather than ending up with eleventy billion docs playing hide-and-seek on my hard drive. But just last week, I received news that ProWritingAid is now an Add-In in Microsoft Word. It integrates with Scrivener, so I don’t have to go back and forth between programs, which is a bonus. It’s helped me tighten up my writing, and I swear it’s helped me become a better author. It is the most useful tool for me as a writer once I hit the self-editing stage.
